Even within full-grain cowhide, grain evenness, thickness tolerance and temper vary widely. Material selection sets the ceiling on what a finished patch can be.

Read the grain
Areas with even grain and fine pores suit designs with generous open space and shallow embossing; areas with pronounced natural grain suit vintage and distressed looks. We select the area of the hide to match the design rather than treating a whole hide as one grade.
Thickness and temper
Thickness tolerance drives how clean the edge looks and how the patch sews. We set the range from your garment's sewing method and waist construction, then confirm temper by hand at the sampling stage.
Colour consistency
Colour varies between hides in the same batch, most visibly on white and bright shades. Every piece is compared against a colour-difference standard, and anything outside range is not put into production — so a garment never ends up with one dark patch and one light one.
